TV vs Komputer ....

Beberapa waktu yang lalu saya menginap di rumah orang tua. Kecuali orang tua, seisi rumah sedang bepergian, jadi kala itu hanya saya dan orang tua.

Ada yang berbeda dengan biasanya. Komputer di sini rusak, sementara saya tidak membawa laptop. Saya tidak membawa buku bacaan. Tetapi (atau namun?) ... kami berlangganan saluran Astro.

Saat itu saya merasa tidak berdaya. Saya jarang sekali menonton TV dan saat itu situasi seakan-akan 'memaksa' saya untuk menyalakan TV dan menonton satu dari sekian saluran yang ada dari Astro.

Rasanya ingin protes, berulang-ulang, tapi tak berdaya. Komputer rusak. Laptop tidak ada. Buku tidak sempat dibawa. Yang ada hanyalah TV. Remote control. National Geographic, Animal Planet, film kartun anak-anak, BBC, MTV, AXN, dst dst ...

Sempat kepikiran menjelajah internet dengan HP. Tapi terus baru sadar kalau saya lupa bawa charger ... dari pada nanti nggak bisa berkomunikasi karena batere habis, akhirnya niat ini saya urungkan ...

Saya jadi berpikir ... saat ini TV boleh dibilang jalur komunikasi 1 arah. Mereka 'bicara', saya 'melihat dan mendengar'. Kalau saya tidak suka, saya pindah jalur. Tapi saya akan menemukan hal yang sama. Ada yang 'bicara' ... dan tugas saya 'melihat dan mendengar' ...

Dengan komputer, banyak yang bisa saya kerjakan. Menonton seperti di TV, membaca, mendengar musik, mencari, menulis, berkomunikasi dengan orang lain via email, chatting, blog, dst, mengolah foto, melakukan riset, mengolah data, mengerjakan proyek, publikasi hasil karya, review hasil karya orang, jual beli .... dan banyak lagi ...

Dari segi infrastruktur, boleh dibilang TV pasti ada di setiap rumah. Dengan 200 ribu rupiah sebulan, kita bisa dapatkan berbagai saluran yang sudah sangat memadai untuk memberikan fasilitas 'bicara' dan 'melihat dan mendengar' ...

Untuk komputer, belum setiap rumah ada komputer. Belum lagi bicara segi akses ke internet yang relatif mahal dan kadang (atau sering?) lambat ... seperti kemacetan di Jakarta ... :-P

Jadi? Saya nggak mau nyimpulan apa-apa, setidaknya untuk saat ini :) Yang pasti, saat itu saya merasa tak berdaya dan seperti ditodong untuk mengikuti kemauan si kotak ajaib itu ... :)

Last night, nearly 3,000 people received a mini lesson on the origin of the universe from perhaps the world’s most famous cosmologist, Stephen Hawking.

Hawking spoke to a packed audience in Zellerbach Hall about how Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity and quantum theory explained the creation of the universe.

The event was also simultaneously broadcast to a sold-out Wheeler Auditorium, as well as Webcast live.

Hawking appeared as part of the “On the Same Page” program, which distributed 4,000 free copies of Hawking’s book “A Briefer History of Time” to freshmen and faculty members.

Hawking, largely regarded as one of the world’s most popular scientists, was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease, a neural disorder that attacks and destroys the motor nerves.

“Hawking is a combination of his brilliance and the challenges he faced in his life,” said Mark Richards, dean of the physical sciences in the College of Letters and Science. “Someone told me he was told to choose an easier subject for his Ph.D. dissertation because doctors didn’t think he would live to finish it. Now he’s 65 years old, and he’s still producing science.”

His lecture, which touched upon subjects such as black holes and spacetime, was peppered with quips that drew laughs from the audience.

“If one believed that the universe had a beginning, the obvious question was, what happened before the beginning,” Hawking said. “What was God doing before He made the world? Was He preparing hell for people who asked such questions?”

According to Hawking, the origin of the universe can be depicted as bubbles in a steam in boiling water. Small bubbles that appear and then collapse represent mini universes that expand only to disintegrate.

A few “bubbles,” Hawking said, will grow to a certain size until they are safe from collapse, and will begin to develop galaxies, stars and eventually human life.

“The universe began with accelerating expansion which we call inflation, because the universe grows in the way prices go up in some countries,” Hawking said. “It expanded in a million trillion trillionths of a second.”

His appearance was one of the most popular events ever hosted at Zellerbach, with one of the fastest ticket sales and a 400-name waiting list.

“I wanted to see his views on the universe,” said freshman David Litwak, an electrical engineering and computer science major. “I didn’t want to miss an opportunity to see a great scientist.”

Hawking’s visit caps a series of events held in anticipation of his arrival. Faculty and administrators such as Chancellor Robert Birgeneau and Nobel Prize winner Charles Townes have been leading discussions on subjects related to Hawking’s book.

Apple Computer Inc. CEO Steve Jobs took the wraps off of the company's long-awaited "iPhone" today, touting it as a three-in-one piece of hardware that acts as a mobile phone, a widescreen iPod with touch controls and an Internet communications device.

"This is a day I've been looking forward to for two and a half years," Jobs said. "Every once in a while a revolutionary product comes along that changes everything."

In 1984, said Jobs, Apple introduced the Macintosh and changed the computer industry. In 2001, the company introduced the iPod and changed the entire music industry.

"Well, today we're introducing three revolutionary products of this class," Jobs said. "The first one is a widescreen iPod with touch controls. The second is a revolutionary mobile phone. The third is a breakthrough Internet communications device."

But, he added, "these are not three separate devices. This is one device. And we are calling it iPhone. Today Apple is going to reinvent the phone."

Hackintosh aka Mac on PC

Ya ... Hackintosh alias Mac on PC ... :) Inilah hasil utak-utik 2 minggu terakhir ini. Sudah agak lama dengar soal ini tapi maju mundur mau nyoba. Kenapa? Karena kaya'nya musti dioprek (utak-utik) baru bisa jalan. Sementara saya lagi agak malas ngoprek ... :-P

Namun gara-gara ada komunitas (dan milis tentunya) ini di Indonesia akhirnya 2 minggu yang lalu saya coba. Mulai dari bangun PC-nya (kebetulan memang harus beli PC), cari softwarenya (dari link di gambar di atas), sampai proses instalasinya. Ternyata memang harus ngoprek hehehe ... untung tidak serepot yang saya duga.

So, sekarang di rumah ada 2 Mac. Satu 'asli', eMac ... satu lagi 'agak asli' yaitu instalasi Hackintosh di PC. Jalan normal nggak? Semalam saya udah pindahin data-data dan aplikasi-aplikasi ke PC ini ... termasuk koleksi foto-foto tentunya, siap bekerja di 'tempat baru' ... :)

Mau nyoba? Bisa mulai dari sini OSx86 Project. Asyik lho .... :)

Ya, kita .... anda ... saya ... kita. Kitalah yang bersama-sama merubah tatanan yang ada, mendobrak batas-batas tradisional. Kitalah yang bersama-sama memperlihatkan kekuatan dari apa yang disebut kerjasama. Ya ... kitalah ... kita yang bersama-sama bisa merubah dunia ini menjadi sesuatu yang semakin baik ... :)

The "Great Man" theory of history is usually attributed to the Scottish philosopher Thomas Carlyle, who wrote that "the history of the world is but the biography of great men." He believed that it is the few, the powerful and the famous who shape our collective destiny as a species. That theory took a serious beating this year.

To be sure, there are individuals we could blame for the many painful and disturbing things that happened in 2006. The conflict in Iraq only got bloodier and more entrenched. A vicious skirmish erupted between Israel and Lebanon. A war dragged on in Sudan. A tin-pot dictator in North Korea got the Bomb, and the President of Iran wants to go nuclear too. Meanwhile nobody fixed global warming, and Sony didn't make enough PlayStation3s.

But look at 2006 through a different lens and you'll see another story, one that isn't about conflict or great men. It's a story about community and collaboration on a scale never seen before. It's about the cosmic compendium of knowledge Wikipedia and the million-channel people's network YouTube and the online metropolis MySpace. It's about the many wresting power from the few and helping one another for nothing and how that will not only change the world, but also change the way the world changes.

The tool that makes this possible is the World Wide Web. Not the Web that Tim Berners-Lee hacked together (15 years ago, according to Wikipedia) as a way for scientists to share research. It's not even the overhyped dotcom Web of the late 1990s. The new Web is a very different thing. It's a tool for bringing together the small contributions of millions of people and making them matter. Silicon Valley consultants call it Web 2.0, as if it were a new version of some old software. But it's really a revolution.

And we are so ready for it. We're ready to balance our diet of predigested news with raw feeds from Baghdad and Boston and Beijing. You can learn more about how Americans live just by looking at the backgrounds of YouTube videos—those rumpled bedrooms and toy-strewn basement rec rooms—than you could from 1,000 hours of network television.

And we didn't just watch, we also worked. Like crazy. We made Facebook profiles and Second Life avatars and reviewed books at Amazon and recorded podcasts. We blogged about our candidates losing and wrote songs about getting dumped. We camcordered bombing runs and built open-source software.

America loves its solitary geniuses—its Einsteins, its Edisons, its Jobses—but those lonely dreamers may have to learn to play with others. Car companies are running open design contests. Reuters is carrying blog postings alongside its regular news feed. Microsoft is working overtime to fend off user-created Linux. We're looking at an explosion of productivity and innovation, and it's just getting started, as millions of minds that would otherwise have drowned in obscurity get backhauled into the global intellectual economy.

Who are these people? Seriously, who actually sits down after a long day at work and says, I'm not going to watch Lost tonight. I'm going to turn on my computer and make a movie starring my pet iguana? I'm going to mash up 50 Cent's vocals with Queen's instrumentals? I'm going to blog about my state of mind or the state of the nation or the steak-frites at the new bistro down the street? Who has that time and that energy and that passion?

The answer is, you do. And for seizing the reins of the global media, for founding and framing the new digital democracy, for working for nothing and beating the pros at their own game, TIME's Person of the Year for 2006 is you.

Sure, it's a mistake to romanticize all this any more than is strictly necessary. Web 2.0 harnesses the stupidity of crowds as well as its wisdom. Some of the comments on YouTube make you weep for the future of humanity just for the spelling alone, never mind the obscenity and the naked hatred.

But that's what makes all this interesting. Web 2.0 is a massive social experiment, and like any experiment worth trying, it could fail. There's no road map for how an organism that's not a bacterium lives and works together on this planet in numbers in excess of 6 billion. But 2006 gave us some ideas. This is an opportunity to build a new kind of international understanding, not politician to politician, great man to great man, but citizen to citizen, person to person. It's a chance for people to look at a computer screen and really, genuinely wonder who's out there looking back at them. Go on. Tell us you're not just a little bit curious.

PALO ALTO, Calif., Nov. 21 — During the 1970s, researchers at Xerox’s Palo Alto Research Center explored a software technique called "garbage collection" used for recycling computer memory. The technique allowed the automatic reuse of blocks of memory that were storing unused programs and data.

Today an anthropologist at the center, Brinda Dalal, has become a self-styled "garbologist" to assist in a joint effort with chemists at the Xerox Research Center of Canada to develop an "erasable paper" system. The goal is to recycle paper documents produced by the company’s copiers — potentially an unlimited number of times.

What she has discovered is a notable change in the role of paper in modern offices, where it is increasingly used as a medium of display rather than storage. Documents are stored on central servers and personal computers and printed only as needed; for meetings, editing or reviewing information.

The pieces of paper spewed from copiers frequently end up back in the recycling bin on the same day they are printed, she noted.

Of the 1,200 pages the average office worker prints per month, 44.5 percent are for daily use — assignments, drafts or e-mail. In her research, scouring the waste produced by office workers, she found that 21 percent of black-and-white copier documents were returned to the recycling bin on the same day they were produced.

"We were surprised by our results," she said. "Nobody looks at the ephemeral information going through people’s waste baskets."

Her research is part of a three-year-old technology development effort to design an add-on system for an office copier to produce "transient documents" that can be easily reused. The researchers now have a prototype system that will produce documents on a specially coated paper with a light yellow tint. Currently, the process works without toner and produces a low-resolution document that appears to be printed with purple ink.

The printed information on the document "disappears" within 16 hours. The documents can be reused more quickly by simply placing them in the copier paper tray. The researchers said that individual pieces of paper had been printed on up to 50 times, and the only current limit in the process appears to be paper life.

"People really like paper," said Eric J. Shrader, a computer scientist who is area manager for printing systems at the Hardware Systems Laboratory of the research center, which is known as PARC. "They like the way it feels."

The project is still very much in a laboratory phase, he said. The researchers are still trying to refine the process, both to increase contrast and to extend control over the lifespan of the print process.

During the 1990s, the Japanese office equipment maker Ricoh developed a commercial system that made it possible to remove toner from paper to make recycling possible, he said. It was possible to recycle individual pieces of paper up to 10 times, according to Ricoh, but that system is no longer commercially available.

Xerox has not yet decided whether it will commercialize its technology, Mr. Shrader said, but the goal is to create a system where the specially coated paper costs between two and three times standard copier paper, making the total cost of the system substantially less than conventional paper when paper is reused repeatedly.

The company said the precise nature of the technology was proprietary and that Xerox had applied for a number of related patents covering the invention. The researchers describe the invention as being based on compounds that can change color when they absorb a certain wavelength of light, but can then gradually revert to their original appearance. The compounds currently self-erase in about 16 to 24 hours, or can be erased immediately when heated.

The challenge Xerox faces is to find a market for a new paper printing technology in an era when information is increasingly being viewed and read on electronic displays of all types.

For example, PARC itself has done extensive research on the idea of "electronic paper." Its researchers separately developed an "electronic reusable paper" system called Gyricon. A Gyricon sheet is a thin layer of transparent plastic composed of small beads similar to toner particles. The beads are "bichromal," with light and dark sides. When a voltage is applied at different positions on the sheet, the beads rotate to create an image. Xerox tried unsuccessfully to commercialize the technology.

The Sony Reader, introduced this year, is based on a similar technology developed by the E Ink Corporation of Cambridge, Mass.

"I worry that this would be like coming out with Super 8 just before the video camera," said Paul Saffo, a Silicon Valley researcher who has been a consultant to Xerox. "This would have been a bigger deal 10 years ago. These days there’s so much getting read online I wonder if time hasn’t passed this by."

The idea of fitting your entire music collection into a single device the size of a packet of cigarettes might have seemed outlandish 15 years ago. But that was before the iPod. Now, one Google exec is predicting the iPod will lead a further media transformation of similar magnitude in the coming decade.

Speaking at the FT World Communications Conference, Nikesh Arora, Google's VP of European operations, told delegates that, in the coming years, the plummeting price of storage and its increasing volume-to-size ratio will give iPods almost unlimited potential to hold music and video.

Arora said, by 2012, iPods could launch at similar prices to those on sale now and yet be capable of holding a whole year's worth of video releases. Around 10 years down the line that could be expanded, creating iPods that can hold all the music ever sold commercially.

He said: "In 12 years, why not an iPod that can carry any video ever produced?" The Google exec said tech is now pursuing a price volume game - searching for the price point at which content will take off for the mainstream.

He added: "It's clearly begun happening," citing iTunes' 99¢ per song download model.

And, Arora believes, mobile is likely to follow the same path. "Mobile is not going to be a different thing," he added - and if the mobile industry is to capitalise on the growth of content, it would be wise to ape the development of the internet.

He said: "The mobile industry has to go through the same phases the internet has gone through... Mobile will have the same learning curve. It would be somewhat foolish to leapfrog the stages the internet went through.

"But before they get there, they will need to satisfy the basic things people are used to doing on the internet."

As a result, the Google VP believes, there will be greater convergence between mobile and internet, as consumers expect to be able to access traditional web content and services on the mobile platform.

Google has already begun to exploit the union by expanding its ad sales business to the world of mobile, after signing deals with operators in Asia and Europe.

The search giant's CEO believes advertising will eventually go on to play a greater role in the mobile industry: eventually doing away with subscriptions in favour of users agreeing to watch targeted advertising.

Reading List: The Starfish and the Spider

Buku ini menarik dan membahas sesuatu yang menjadi keyakinan saya selama ini. Yaitu bagaimana gerakan Open Source telah mendobrak kebiasaan-kebiasaan lama di dunia ini. Prinsip kebebasan, kreativitas, berbagi, saling menghargai, ternyata mampu menembus batas komersial dan bisnis. Tulisan saya sebelumnya soal Big Bang Internet juga menyoal soal ini.

Tadinya mikir, beli ah bukunya. Tapi mikir lagi, kalau kira-kira isinya udah tahu, buat apa ya? Sok tahu banget hehehe ... :-P

It sounds like the opening line to a bad joke: What do the Apache Indians, Craigslist, Skype, and Al Qaeda have in common? The answer goes to the heart of a rewardingly simple new book: They're all decentralized organizations that have bedeviled the established hierarchy hell-bent on crushing them.

The Starfish and the Spider is about the open-source revolution, a trend that authors Ori Brafman and Rod A. Beckstrom demonstrate is simultaneously dismantling many established industries while harnessing the creativity of the masses to generate new ones. (The title refers to the authors' metaphor that a starfish and a spider appear to be structured similarly, but if you crush a spider's head, it dies. Cut a starfish in half, and you'll end up with two.) Open source has spread far beyond its recent successes with file sharing and software. You can now find cooperatively developed art, literature, even religion.

What Brafman and Beckstrom attempt to add to the discussion is a sense of how you can harness the power of leaderless, decentralized movements. Their effort has mixed results. The authors do an excellent job of illustrating how cooperative networks--such as the Apaches prior to the early 1900s, or Al Qaeda today--benefit from operating without a central hierarchy. But they can't exactly explain how you can do it. Ironically, the best they can do is explain how to interrupt or redirect a starfish network when it's chewing away at profits. The U.S. government finally bested the Apaches, for instance, when it provided its leaders with cattle, a form of wealth that reshaped the amorphous, nomadic tribes into easily manageable hierarchies.

Wealth, it turns out, is the elephant in the room. As the authors put it, "The moment you introduce property rights into the equation [be they intellectual, physical, or otherwise], everything changes: The starfish organization turns into a spider." As a consolation, they make a case for the viability of hybrid entities. Think eBay or Intuit --firms that channel customers' and employees' bottom-up efforts into hierarchical businesses. They may be the best one can hope for. Brafman and Beckstrom make this much clear: If you're the head of a spider, look out for the starfish.

Combine Cluetrain's storming-the-gates passion with… examples like Linus Torvalds's Linux and its place in the open-source revolution to get… Starfish, which needed more Linuxes but whose underlying ideas ring true.

Memang hebat Google ini. Tidak pernah berhenti dan sibuk menjelajah ke daerah-daerah yang tidak terpikirkan oleh orang. Lincah, inovatif, fleksibel, dan selalu bergerak ... Coba bandingkan dengan perusahaan tempat anda bekerja. Apakah lambat, banyak birokrasi dan peraturan, dan sulit beradaptasi? :)

Google skipped right past the third dimension and landed directly in the fourth (time) by offering historical maps on Google Earth. Now you can travel back in time — for example, I am looking at the globe of 1790. Don't expect detailed high resolution photography from days gone by, but it's still interesting to see old maps overlaid on the satellite imagery of today.
